A hallway picture can have two kinds of story: information about the work itself and the household's memory of acquiring or displaying it. Keep those details in a private record if they matter to you. The display does not need a visible caption to preserve an accurate reference.
Identify the particular picture
Take a clear personal reference photograph where appropriate and record its ordinary location. Include enough description to distinguish it from similar frames. A note saying hall print can become ambiguous when the display changes or several pictures share the same colours.
Record the frame separately from the image when useful. A replacement frame and the work inside it may have different origins. Keeping them distinct prevents a future note about the frame purchase from being mistaken for the picture's source.
Separate known details from memory
Write verified information available from retained packaging, a receipt or another reliable source. Keep the creator, title or purchase reference only where actually known. Do not invent an attribution because the image resembles a familiar style.
Put personal memories in a separate part of the note. A recollection of a trip or a gift can be meaningful without establishing authorship or provenance. If a date is approximate, label it as approximate rather than giving a confident year that was never recorded.
Keep documents appropriately stored
Place relevant receipts or supplied information in a suitable household record location. Use a reference in the picture note rather than fastening bulky paperwork to the display. Keep private financial or personal details out of an openly visible hallway label.
Do not remove a frame or open a backing solely to complete a record unless the task is appropriate and can be done without damaging the object. If information is not accessible, leave the question open. A modest accurate record is more useful than a detailed invented one.
Update only when the display changes
If the picture moves, note its new place where that helps the household. Keep old installation or care assumptions from being treated as instructions for a different frame or wall. Use appropriate reliable guidance for any practical display work rather than relying on the memory note.
Review the record when there is a real reason, such as replacing a frame, sharing information with a recipient or reorganising household files. It does not need to become a recurring cataloguing task. A hallway picture can remain an ordinary part of the home while its known details and personal meaning are preserved elsewhere, clearly enough that another person can understand what is fact, what is remembered and what remains unknown.
